Description: Statewide Critical Habitat Designations - Consolidated. Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers the importance of these areas to the conservation of these species. Special protections and/or restrictions are possible in areas where federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required. Designation of Critical Habitat for various species. Critical Habitat is the term used in the Endangered Species Act to define those areas of habitat that are known to be essential for an endangered or threatened species to recover and that require special management or protection. See individual species and metadata files for more complete descriptions of the datasets used to derive this layer. 8/9/17: Statewide GIS Program staff merged and dissolved individual species layers into one consolidated layer for use in determining whether a location is within or outside of a critical habitat area, regardless of species. 2/17/22: Statewide GIS Program staff received additional critical habitat data from USFWS (2018 Big Island 3 Plants layer) and incorporated the layer into the statewide consolidated critical habitat layer. 3/28/24: Statewide GIS Program staff received additional critical habitat data from USFWS (2024 Big Island 12 Species layer) and incorporated the layer into the statewide consolidated critical habitat layer.
